Annual Rotary Public Speaking Competition

"Youth Speaks" 2017/2018

The local heat of this year's competition took place at Cuthbert Mayne School, Hemel Hempstead on Tuesday 28th November 2017.

In a change from previous years, the Rotary Clubs of Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead  joined forces to organise and stage the event.

The competition was divided into two sections;

  • INTERMEDIATE for students who were over 11 and under 14 on 31st August 2017 and

  • UPPER for students who were over 14 and under 18 on the same date.

Schools could enter one or more teams of three students in both age categories

  • teams comprised a Chair Person, a Main Speaker, and a Presenter of a Vote of Thanks

  • the subject of their presentation was entirely their choice

  • teams presented against the clock

  • experienced adjudicators assessed each team

Eight teams entered the competition from Tring School, Astley Cooper School, Ashlyns School and John F Kennedy School. Presentations, made in front of an audience of parents, teachers and Rotarians, were of a high standard across the board with a range of subject matters that were  stimulating, informative and above all thought provoking.

The winner of the Intermediate Team presentations was John F Kennedy School with their message “Would they understand?” and the winner of the Upper Team presentations was Astley Cooper School with their plea for greater interaction between the old and young which  they referred to as “All age mash up”.
